Is this MCS-150 or UCR letter a scam?

Short answer

Often, yes. Filing the MCS-150 with FMCSA is free, and UCR is filed on ucr.gov. Letters or emails that pressure you to pay a third party, or ask for your FMCSA PIN or login, are a common scam. Go to the official site yourself instead of clicking links.

Warning signs

Urgent deadlines with threats of fines in an email or letter you didn't expect.

A request for your FMCSA PIN, Login.gov password, SSN or bank details.

A web address that isn't fmcsa.dot.gov, ucr.gov or your state's official site.

Fees for things that are free when filed directly.

What to do

Type the official address into your browser yourself: fmcsa.dot.gov for registration and ucr.gov for UCR.

Check your real deadlines with a free lookup so a fake 'past due' notice doesn't rush you.

Check your own deadlines free

Enter your USDOT number to see your MCS-150, UCR and IFTA dates.
